Proxim Unveils WLAN for Pocket PC

Proxim, Inc. (Nasdaq:PROX) announced Monday wireless local area networking (WLAN) products for Pocket PC handhelds.

The company said its Harmony CompactFlash Card uses Proxim’s OpenAir frequency-hopping technology and supports 802.11b wireless LAN connections. It is designed for use with Compaq iPAQ and Casio Cassiopeia E125 handhelds.

Proxim has claimed in lawsuits that its technology is patented and is asking for royalties from vendors of 802.11b WLAN products. Several vendors have said the patent claims are not valid and Agere has sued, claiming it, and not Proxim, holds patents related to 802.11b.

Besides supporting 802.11b, the company says its OpenAir technology also supports 802.11a. The add-on will be available in mid-July for $149, the company said.
