VOCAL Technologies, Ltd. today announced the immediate availability of customized 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g solutions.
Specifically, the solutions enable designers to access different elements of the physical layer (Layer 1) and modify them to suit different applications.
VOCAL Technologies stated that these customized solutions will still be in compliance with the WLAN standards. Potential customized solutions that the company said it could offer include channel probing, increased security, smart antenna integration, ray-tracing, and advance coding.
The company stated that the products are designed to be used on multiple hardware platforms. According to the company, these solutions are available now.
In a related announcement, VOCAL Technologies announced a proprietary development for WLANs that it said would increase the battery life of mobile units by a factor of four. The additional power drain that WLAN devices place on already minimally acceptable battery lives of most mobile devices puts a premium on any extensions of battery life that can be implemented. IceFyre Semiconductor, which we reported on late last year, is another company which claims to have developed an 802.11a power consumption solution that decreases total use by a factor of four.
This proprietary mode of operation, the company said, combines the “asymmetrical use of Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) Codes and Turbo codes in order to minimize the power requirements of mobile devices in a wireless local area network (WLAN).” The solution uses the LDPC Codes in the downlink and Turbo codes in the uplink to accomplish the power savings. The company said that the asymmetrical use of these code-types effectively shifts the majority of the power requirements to the transmitter and receiver of the base unit.
Vocal Technologies, Ltd. stated that the LDPC Code and Turbo code software are also available immediately.
