Intersil (Nasdaq:ISIL) said it will co-develop chipsets that combine wireless Local Area Network (LAN) and Bluetooth capabilities.
Intersil previously developed IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN technology. It said it will work with Silicon Wave, which has developed Bluetooth products, for the joint chipset.
Intersil said the goal of the collaboration is to take a major step forward in miniaturizing wireless technology so that both technologies can use a single antenna. The company said it expects the combined technologies to be considerably smaller than separate chipsets.
Initially, the chipsets will support the PCMCIA and MiniPCI card platforms, according to the company. The companies said that developers from both are working together to create reference designs. It provided no timeframe for delivering that design.
