Apple Security Holes Outnumber Windows


A report by security vendor Secunia took a look at the vendors with the highest number of vulnerabilities reported for the first half of the year. In the lead? Apple — despite far more high-profile attacks being executed on Microsoft’s Windows platform.


So is the Mac’s longstanding reputation as a more secure platform than Windows at risk? While the numbers may seem alarming (particularly to Mac fans!) the situation may not necessarily be altogether dire for Apple users. eSecurity Planet takes a look at Secunia’s report and the implications.


A common taunt from the Apple faithful is that the Mac OS is more secure than Windows, but a new report by the Flemish security firm Secunia finds that Apple products have more vulnerabilities than any other vendor.

Secunia’s study (PDF) covers reported vulnerabilities in the first half of 2010, and comes with the caveat that it’s a report based on pure numbers. That’s not the best measure of threat assessment, of course, since it doesn’t look at the severity of the vulnerabilities.
