Enterprise Wi-Fi users at Risk?

The Black Hat security conference has established itself as a key venue for the release of important security-related news and developments. Not only are new solutions announced, but security researchers use Black Hat to draw attention to security holes and vulnerabilities.

Wi-Fi Planet reports on the latest research Core Security discussed at Black Hat, which indicates a security hole could leave Cisco routers open to attack under certain conditions. The discovery is related to the WEP wireless security protocol, which is known to have weaknesses.

When it comes to locking down wireless access points, few experts consider the WEP wireless security protocol to be secure, since it can be compromised easily with widely available tools.

Yet despite WEP’s known weaknesses, support for the discredited protocol remains available on some routers available from industry leader Cisco — a fact that attackers could use to seize control of the routers, according to new warnings from a pair of researchers from Core Security.
