AOL Shopping Goes to the Extreme

Nov 24, 1999

Just in time to appease holiday shoppers frustrated with running around the mall, America Online Inc. Wednesday launched a new online catalog within its shopping channel.

Labeled “Extreme Shopping,” Shop@AOL now features items designed for those seeking high-end gifts. Items include an official NASCAR Racecar and travel package to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway; a home in Beverly Hills, a complete home entertainment system and a 10.5 carat diamond ring with 4.5 carat sapphires.

“This holiday season people will buy just about everything online, from books and
music to furniture, diamond rings — even antique cars and million-dollar
homes,” said Patrick Gates, AOL’s vice president of e-commerce. “. . .By
shopping online, consumers can escape the hassle of running to
crowded stores, making it easier, more convenient and far more relaxing to
use the mouse, instead of the mall, this holiday season.”

In addition to Extreme Shopping, this holiday season Shop@AOL features
almost 30 new gift catalogs and gift centers covering a variety of product categories.
