Superscape VR plc has delivered a new,
interactive 3-D data visualization system, known as Optic, for use by the
European Consumer Marketing department of IBM.

IBM will use the technology to provide virtual store product placement and
competitive information from retail stores in the UK, Europe, the Middle East
and Africa.

Optic initially provides a template for a virtual store, into which can be
dragged and dropped a variety of ready made fixtures and fittings, such as
shelving, gondolas, tills and counters to replicate the local store.

The Optic system is comprised of a Microsoft Access database with an interactive
3-D front-end, built using Superscape’s VRT5 authoring software and C++.

Optic was developed by the Content Solutions Group of Interactive 3-D
specialist, Superscape VR and is the brainchild of David Miles, the IBM
director responsible for consumer marketing in EMEA countries.

“No other computer manufacturer has a system anything like this,” said Miles. “Essentially,
it is providing us with a state of the art market intelligence product
placement tool, but it has almost endless potential in a marketing
environment for high value goods.”

IBM is using the technology to track merchandising and sales of IBM products
and those of competitors.
