The most popular deployment type for OpenStack is as an on-premises private cloud, according the recent OpenStack user survey, which is based on 669 responses from cloud operators and users.
The OpenStack platform provides a framework that enables multiple underlying technology options for compute, storage and networking capabilities.
The study also found that the Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) open-source technology is the most widely deployed virtualization hypervisor. There are also multiple tools that operators and users can choose to deploy an OpenStack cloud. The most popular deployment tool is Puppet, which was used by 45 percent of those who have deployed OpenStack into production.
