Twitter Bug Let Users Kidnap 'Followers'

Gadget site uncovers simple way to force other users to follow you, even big movie and TV stars, but Twitter staffers rush out a fix to the weakness in the system.

You can lead a horse to water but can't make it drink. Well, you can't make people follow you on Twitter, either. Or can you? A bug was uncovered today that would let you force someone on Twitter to follow you, even if they didn't want to. The site that found it is no stranger to the news. eSecurity Planet has the story.


Microblogging site Twitter says it has patched a hole in its software that would let any user force other Twitterers to follow him or her without their consent.

"We identified and resolved a bug that permitted a user to 'force' other users to follow them. We're now working to rollback all abuse of the bug that took place," said a post on Twitter's Status page Monday morning.
