BellSouth announced today that beginning in August it will roll out Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) Internet access service to the first of 30 Southeastern markets for $49.95 a month.
The service is slated to launch in New Orleans, followed by Atlanta,
Birmingham, AL, Jacksonville, FL, Raleigh and Charlotte, NC, and Ft. Lauderdale, FL providing online connectivity to 1.7 million customers by the end of the year. An additional 23 markets will be ADSL-enabled in 1999.
The company said it will also offer various ADSL access services to other
network service providers and large corporations.
Pricing for the BellSouth.net FastAccess ADSL service for residential and business clients will be $49.95 per month if customers subscribe to BellSouth’s Complete Choice or Business Choice service plans, which also include features such as call waiting, forwarding, and ID services.
For customers not on these plans, the price jumps to $59.95 a month. The
company said there is also a one-time fee of $99.95 for installation and
$199.95 for equipment. Interested consumers can sign up for the service at
the company’s Web site.
“BellSouth.net FastAccess makes your high-speed connection to the Internet
as easy as the click of a mouse,” says Donna Lachance, vice president of
Marketing for BellSouth.net Services. “An Internet specialist will visit your home or business to install the equipment, test your new line and even install your Internet software and establish your BellSouth.net Internet account on your PC.”
Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line technology is designed to allow users to download data 30 to 100 times more quickly than standard dial-up connections.
