Cable & Wireless (NYSE: CWP), a London-based telco, ASP and managed hosting provider, today announced that its Exodus hosting service has been selected by Nintendo of America Inc., to provide Internet services for the company’s Nintendo.com site.
According to Cable & Wireless, Nintendo — a former Exodus customer — was able to migrate Nintendo.com and many other Nintendo sites such as Zelda.com, gameboy.com and gamecube.com from the company’s former service provider within two days, without any service disruption to customers.
“Exodus has the expertise, track record and solid future we are looking for in a hosting provider,” stated Dan Lambert, network architect, Nintendo of America. “With all of the consolidation going on in the marketplace among hosting and managed service providers, we are looking not only for technical expertise but also a company that offers longevity and financial strength.”
Nintendo uses the redundant site hosted at Santa Clara, Calif.-based Exodus as a real-time business continuity site, according to Cable & Wireless. This service is designed to ensure that Nintendo.com remains fully accessible and retains high performance levels for customers despite any unplanned events like a natural disaster or planned events such as seasonal spikes in activity.
In recent years, the hosting market has evolved beyond being a commodity service, according to industry watchers, who say that financial stability and value-added services are increasingly important.
“Customers are seeking a long-term strategic partner with a global presence, a broad spectrum of services, and a strong financial position,” according to David Willis, vice president of Global Networking Strategies at Meta Group, a Stamford, Conn.-based market research firm.
Cable & Wireless markets its services in the U.S. under the Exodus brand (and as Cable & Wireless in the rest of the world). Its service offerings include managed hosting, business continuity, managed security, managed storage services, content delivery and streaming technologies.
