DataPower’s XML-Accelerators Get Boost

A Cambridge, Mass., developer of network infrastructure that helps companies handle increasing XML-based traffic, such as Web services
applications, has raised $9.5 million in second-round financing.

DataPower Technology will use the backing to accelerate development, sales and marketing of its “XML-Aware”
technology.

“Enterprises are adopting XML at rapid rate to facilitate inter- and intra-company communications but their network infrastructure is ill prepared to support the
requirements of this new traffic type,” said Eugene Kuznetsov, DataPower’s CTO and founder.

Founded in 1999, the privately held firm contends that its device delivers the processing power of 10 servers — breaking the performance bottleneck associated with
XML processing and lowering project costs.

The DataPower platform also helps protect against XML-based denial-of-service attacks and provides load balancing between back-end servers and real-time
statistics reports.

“XML is not a nice-to-have, it is a must have for enterprises serious about optimizing application efficiency,” said Jeff Fagnan, of Seed Capital Partners, one of the
round’s investors. “DataPower’s XML-acceleration devices are a key requirement for enterprises that rely on XML for mission critical applications.”

Other backers include Venrock Associates and Mobius Venture Capital. Michael Tyrrell, of Venrock, Bill Burnham, of Mobius, and Fagnan have joined
DataPower’s board of directors.
