Interfax Communications, a division of Interprovincial Satellite Services (INTERSAT), signed an agreement with MetroNet Communications Group and enhanced its proprietary Internet fax interface.
MetroNet Communications Group is Canada’s only national facilities-based
competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC). The agreement will establish
Internet fax points-of-presence (POP’s) in Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto.
MetroNet services are provided through a state-of-the-art fibre optic high
capacity network infrastructure. INTERSAT now has POP agreements for 40
North American cities and two overseas.
INTERSAT has also developed an enhanced version of its Interfax internet fax
interface, incorporating full dual-modem multi-tasking capability.
“Our first generation Interfax was very successful through its beta trials
in providing fax-to-fax communications over the Internet. The purpose of the
new version is to provide enhanced throughput capability at the user level.
We are targeting it to be in customers’ hands through a controlled
commercial service rollout within a month,” said Intersat CEO, J.T. Knight.
Now Interfax can more than double the throughput of the original Interfax by communicating simultaneously in either direction as required with the
Internet, or PSTN on one side and the fax machine on the other.
The service, to be released this summer, will be sold through ISPs, while
the interface itself will be distributed through both ISPs and office
computing equipment vendors.
