Digital identity firm Tovaris has closed a $1.4 million Series A round of financing led by private investor Samuel Patterson of Charlottesville, Va. Tovaris, which is also located in Charlottesvile, provides e-mail and document security services for Internet service providers (ISPs) and application service providers (ASPs) as well as other enterprises.

Patterson has 21 years experience as a scientist in photogrammetric engineering, remote sensing and related information capture, processing, storage, transfer, and encryption technologies. Patterson has worked extensively with government agencies and private companies in the development of these technologies and related applications. Patterson serves on the company’s board of directors, as does Sanfjord Teu, former executive vice president of Signet Bank, and Bernard Siegel, interim chief executive officer of Yazam.

“This significant round of funding will further establish Tovaris as the leading provider of turn-key e-mail security services,” said Richard Gordon, chief executive officer of Tovaris. “We are the only secure e-mail provider to offer a universal, easy-to-use, affordable, incredibly scalable secure e-mail technology — the cornerstone of digital identity management.”

Added Patterson, “Digital identity protection and security are important issues as companies expand their enterprises through the use of the Internet. The Internet security market is poised to explode in the coming months and Tovaris is uniquely positioned to capitalize financially on that opportunity.”
