Web host WebSideStory of San Diego has raised $3 million in third-round funding. The round was led by private investment firm Westcliff Capital Management, and brings the company’s venture capital tally to $40 million to date.

Existing investors Summit Partners and TA Associates did not participate in this round.

WebSideStory jointly announced the launch of a special promotion designed to help sports sites capitalize on the large number of visitor traffic expected during the NBA playoffs.

WebSideStory will provide its HitBox Enterprise real-time Web audience analysis service for 60 days to a limited number of sites that want to measure their return on investment in marketing and advertising campaigns related to the playoffs.

HitBox uses a browser-based technology that can monitor the activities of millions of visitors per hour. The service requires no hardware or software installation and is made available in real time through any Internet connection.

According to company representatives, the service will be made available for one fixed fee.
