Apple’s iOS 4.3 is available today — two days ahead of schedule — and provides users with faster Safari performance, hotspot functionality for the iPhone, improved AirPlay video streaming and better Wi-Fi iTunes sharing.
At the request of fans, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) also included a customization option for the lock switch on the iPad — now through the iPad settings users can turn it into a mute button.
The news of the iOS 4.3 update comes two days before the iPad 2 goes on sale, and in the wake of reports placing rival mobile OS Android in the top spot in terms of U.S. market share.
Google-backed (NASDAQ: GOOG) Android spiked 7.7 percent to 31.2 percent, while Research In Motion’s (NASDAQ: RIMM) BlackBerry OS tanked by 5 percent to 30 percent, and Apple’s iOS remained flat at 24 percent for the three-month reporting period ending in January, according to comScore’s study of U.S. mobile market share.
