In a move designed to help bring Web services to the wireless world, application infrastructure provider BEA Systems Inc. and Research In Motion Limited (RIM)
today announced a strategic relationship.
The goal of the joint venture is to create a WebLogic Enterprise Platform-based framework to ease the development and delivery of mobile Web Services applications using BlackBerry, RIM’s popular wireless email handheld device.
According to the San Jose, Calif.-based BEA Systems and the Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM, the development framework will combine the capabilities of BEA’s WebLogic Workshop and BlackBerry to create a single solution to support an always-on architecture with end-to-end security and back-end integration to corporate systems.
“The creation of this framework is intended to enable ISVs (indepedent software vendors) and enterprise customers to easily develop mobile applications and allow carriers to offer new services for BlackBerry users,” said David Yach, vice president, software at Research In Motion.
By combining the capabilities BEA WebLogic Workshop and BlackBerry, enterprise and application developers will be able to work on the same code base and collaborate on the same development projects.
“With this relationship, our goal is to enable enterprises to integrate all their applications on top of a unified, simplified, extensible — and mobile — application infrastructure platform,” said Adam Bosworth, vice president of engineering, BEA Systems.
