Lucent Upgrades Russia Network

Lucent Technologies said it has completed a 3G network expansion project for a Delta Telecom, a Russian mobile carrier. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The upgrade allows Delta to increase its coverage around St. Petersburg, and augment voice with other services including security, mobile Internet access, high-speed data and video transfer.

“By increasing the capacity and coverage of our network we are able to provide to our customers greater flexibility and anytime, anywhere access to advanced mobile services and information resources,” Victor Ustyuzhanin, Delta’s general director, said in a statement.

Lucent’s services arm installed its Flexent CDMA2000 1X base stations and increased the capacity of a mobile switching center to enhance the one-year-old network.

Based in Murray Hills, N.J., Lucent delivered components for the job through Verysell Telecom. In the past 13 years, Verysell has shipped nearly $1 billion worth of IT and networking equipment into Russia.

Telecom vendors are increasingly focused on overseas markets, especially for wireless equipment. Carriers in these countries see the new technology as a way to overcome minimal landline investments.
