Nextel Teams With Guiliani

Wireless provider Nextel Communications Inc. is teaming and with former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s Giuliani Partners LLC in an effort to improve public safety communications across the United States. The effort will be supported by the extensive public safety background and experience of senior executives from Giuliani Partners including New York City’s former Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik, former Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen and former Director of the Office of Emergency Management Richard Sheirer.

The Nextel-Giuliani alliance is targeting two public safety communications challenges: the need to resolve interference to their communications systems and to allow for instant, rapid, secure communications capabilities between public safety authorities across multiple jurisdictions.

“Public safety agencies in many areas of the country are increasingly facing problems with communications disruptions and interference,” said Giuliani, chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Giuliani Partners. “This interference can disrupt critical safety communications among police officers, firefighters, rescue teams and other emergency response personnel, putting both them and the public they serve at risk.”

Tim Donohue, president and CEO of the Reston, Va.-based Nextel, added, “Nextel’s alliance with Giuliani Partners brings to the table unmatched knowledge of the unique communications needs associated with both day-to-day and emergency public safety operations. We are committed to working with government and industry constituencies to find the best solutions for resolving interference and creating the opportunity for seamless public safety communications.”

Nextel has built the largest guaranteed all-digital wireless network in the country covering thousands of communities across the United States. Nextel and Nextel Partners Inc., currently serve 197 of the top 200 U.S. markets. Through recent market launches, Nextel and Nextel Partners service is available today in areas of the U.S. where approximately 230 million people live or work.
