Networking firm Cisco Systems Inc. Monday released new virtual private network intranet and extranet solutions designed specifically for service providers.

The new products incorporate Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) and Cisco Service Management System (CSM). CSM is a suite of network and service management applications designed to reduce costs while allowing service
providers to rapidly provision and manage intranet and extranet VPNs.

Cisco intranet and extranet VPN MPLS-based architecture allow service providers to offer customers dedicated access to remote offices, customers, partners, or suppliers over a Cisco router or ATM switching environment.

To accommodate anticipated growth in the intranet industry, Cisco’s MPLS architecture scales to support tens of thousands of VPNs, the firm said.

Cisco intranet and extranet VPN solutions are scheduled to be released with Cisco’s IOS software in July.
