AMD today said that Dirk Meyer has been promoted to president and chief
operating officer of AMD, sharing the management of the No. 2 chipmaker with
Hector Ruiz.

Ruiz relinquished the president title but retains his duties as CEO and
chairman of AMD’s board.

The move is designed to improve the Sunnyvale, Calif., company’s operations
as the company continues its competitive battle with market leader Intel.
AMD sued
Intel for anti-competitive actions last year, a legal battle that could last
years.

Ruiz credited Meyer, who has been serving as president and chief operating
officer of AMD’s Microprocessor Solutions Sector (MSS) business, with
bolstering AMD’s success in recent years.

“He has made amazing progress with our microprocessor business, making it
the envy of our industry,” Ruiz said in a statement. “His leadership,
operational skills and business acumen have positioned the company for
long-term, sustainable growth, and I’m very pleased that AMD now will
benefit from those skills on an even grander scale.”

Meyer began his career at AMD in 1995 and ascended rapidly up the ranks.

He was promoted to director of engineering for the Athlon microprocessor
program the following year. In 1999, Meyer was promoted to the position of
vice president of engineering for the Computation Products Group (CPG).

In 2001, Meyer was elevated to group vice president of CPG. In 2002, he was
named senior vice president of CPG and was named an executive officer of
AMD. In 2004, he was promoted to executive vice president of CPG and in 2005
was appointed president and COO of AMD’s Microprocessor Solutions Sector.

Meyer worked at Digital Equipment Corporation for almost 10 years, where he
was co-architect of the Alpha 21064 and 21264
microprocessors.
