Lucent Technologies added another company to its recent line of acquisitions today with the purchase of MassMedia Communications, Inc., a privately-held, startup developer of network interoperability software.
MassMedia supplies a family of products that manage connections across data, voice and video networks. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Lucent said it currently uses MassMedia software with its PacketStar ATM access family of products to connect ISDN and ATM networks.
“MassMedia’s line of products deliver superior end-to-end interoperability demanded by service providers as they build up their data networks to deliver advanced services such as voice-over ATM and video conferencing,” said Bill O’Shea, president of Lucent’s Data Networking Systems group. “And equally important, MassMedia’s product family enables rapid applications development which translates into new revenue opportunities for service providers.”
The company also announced that Andrew Patka, president and founder of MassMedia, will join Lucent as director, signaling applications and call control, within the Data Networking Systems’ research and development organization. Javier Morales, chief technical officer and MassMedia co-founder, will continue in his current capacity as technology director. Osman Duman, vice president of marketing and sales, will join Lucent as director of technology marketing.
Recently, Lucent announced the acquisition of a number of companies, including LANNET, a Tel Aviv, Israel-based global provider of next-generation Ethernet and ATM intelligent switches for local area networks, and Australian telecommunications company JNA.
