Last week, the Speed/Bandwidth sector was the worst-performing
of our 13 Internet groups, losing 8.8%. This week, Speed/Bandwidth
bounces back to lead all ‘Net sectors – and still finishes in
the red. That’s how the month has gone for Internet stocks. For
the second consecutive week, all sectors lose ground, despite
Wednesday’s rally. How long can this go on? I hate to say it,
but it could be for quite awhile. Investors are still flinching
over earnings warnings, while high-profile flameouts such as
Amazon.com and CMGI continue to provoke investor anxiety and
despair. One thing is for sure: Fall rally or no fall rally,
it’s now clear that the majority of Internet stocks will finish
the year down. (Of course, some won’t even finish the year.)
Roughly 80% of the stocks that have been trading all year are
down at least 30%, and only 30 of 293, or 10%, are up. Four
of our sectors have no year-to-date gainers, while another four
have only one each. If an autumn ascent is to begin in September,
which I’ve been expecting, it had better start soon. Today,
the first official day of fall, would be a swell time, but
it’s not likely this bearish market will turn bullish before
the Q3 numbers start rolling in.
*Market Cap figure is in millions unless otherwise noted.

which retains the top spot in the sector. HAND is up 91.4% over
the past three months, a performance eclipsed by only four other
‘Net stocks, including rival Palm, which has gained 96.4% during
that period. This week Handspring unveils plans for an expansion
pack for its Visor handheld electronic organizers that will
provide users with mobile phone functions. Wireless phone software
provider Phone.com continues to get a lift from its proposed
merger with messaging software vendor Software.com. PHCM shares
are up 30% since the deal was announced in early August.

Latin American portal StarMedia Network cuts 15% of its workforce
in a bid to hasten profitability. The move gets a thumbs-up from
Credit Suisse First Boston, which reiterates its “buy” rating,
but the market has a different perspective, driving shares to
the bottom of the sector. I always get hate mail when I write
anything critical about GoTo.com, so let me just say that this
week’s 10.9% loss is a clear sign the company is turning things
around. Further, no Internet stock has lost 70% this year with
more style and panache than GOTO. Chinese portal Sohu.com gets
an ever-so-slight boost from its plan to buy rival ChinaRen.com
for $30 million. The merged entity will be China’s largest portal.

Quokka Sports raises $76 million in debt financing after being
unable to attract support for a secondary offering. The online
sports content company says the money will allow it to function
through the second quarter of 2002, when it expects to become
profitable. Online financial site TheStreet.com issues Q3
revenue warning and says it’s looking to make deals with other
companies. Translation: Someone save us! NBC Internet has been
virtually flatlining, with a slight downward drift, since its
Q2 earnings warning in mid-June. Wednesday’s close of $6.25 is
a new low.

It hardly ever finishes near the bottom of the pack – how could
it with so many “dead tickers walking” to compete with? – but
Amazon.com’s performance this year is perhaps the biggest disaster
in the e-tail realm. The Internet’s largest online store has lost
50% of its value this year, including nearly 12% this week.
Company meeting with analysts fails to reassure investors that
the company will ever be profitable. And for good reason: Unlike
many times in the past, company officials declined to predict
when AMZN would emerge from the red. Online auction giant eBay,
in contrast, already is profitable and surges after issuing a
bullish revenue projection. Topping the group is Barnes & Noble.com,
which benefits from deal with Yahoo that would displace Amazon.com
as the premiere online merchant on the Yahoo network.

After spending the first half of September in a seeming state
of suspended animation – closing at 94 cents per share six out
of 10 days – Mortgage.com comes back to life (or at least above
$1). No catalyst, unless someone shocked MDCM’s heart without
us knowing it. Internet Capital Group is threatening to fall
below $20 per share for the first time in over a year after
IBM files to dump 750,000 shares of ICGE. More turmoil at
another incubator: divine interVentures sees its president and
COO resign. CMGI beats expectations with narrower-than-expected
Q4 loss announced Thursday. It will be interesting to see how
the street reacts in the coming week. The company also said it
would take AltaVista public by the end of October. When have
I heard that before?

No mystery why server appliance vendor Cobalt Networks leads
this sector: Sun Microsystems announced this week that it would
by CBLT for $2 billion, a price that values shares at 43%
above Monday’s closing price of $41.13. MIND C.T.I., which
makes real-time billing and customer care software for
voice over IP service providers, continues to gain in the wake
of Q2 results announced in early September. Revenues doubled
to $3.6 million, while net income rose 115% to $879,000.
Allaire plummets after issuing Q3 earnings warning that
shocked some investors. Analysts expected a 7 cents per share
profit in Q3, but ALLR says it will instead post losses of
5 cents to 20 cents per share.

Online consumer behavior research firm @plan dipped below $5 per share
on Sept. 11, and has since rebounded strongly. APLN leads this battered
sector for the week and for the year. Don’t bet the farm on a surge
by FreeShop.com: The direct marketing network rallies this week after
falling below $4 per share, but it’s down 11% since Tuesday. Mediaplex
issues Q3 revenue warning and gets downgraded by Credit Suisse First
Boston. Direct marketing firm MyPoints.com also falls on a Q3 warning,
but this one comes not from the company, but from Me
rrill Lynch.

Luminant Worldwide had been expecting a third-quarter profit. Investors
must have been too, because after the company warned it would instead
post a loss, LUMT shares were pounded by the market. Sensing a bargain,
investors bumped up shares of Viant on Sept. 11 after the stock hit
a new low in the days following (what else?) a Q3 revenue warning.
Their reward? A newer all-time low closing price of $6.31 by Thursday!
GenesisIntermedia.com continues its phenomenal impression of an
inanimate object. In 27 days of trading since Aug. 15, GENI has
closed at $15 per share an astounding 18 times.

The top-performing sector of the year leads all other groups this
week. Inktomi takes the No. 1 slot thanks to its announced plans to
buy online broadcasting company FastForward Networks for $1.3 billion,
sending shares up 12% last Thursday. Shares rose another 5% on Wednesday
after Inktomi announced an initiative to deliver a set of integrated
search tools designed to allow Internet, corporate and wireless
customers to search across the Web, intranets and extranets, which should give
the company strong inroads into the enterprise market. This week’s
sector runner-up (and Inktomi competitor), CacheFlow, has gained 333%
since closing at $30.50 on April 17. CFLO beat street estimates for
Q3 in August (though it still posted a loss) and has been getting
good buzz in the press.

ZapMe! subsidiary r)Star Broadba

to install and manage a broadband network for Crown American Realty
Trust’s two dozen enclosed shopping malls in the U.S. Investors
in Web device vendor Netpliance are getting an eye-opener (and gouge)
as shares sink to the $2 mark. Since going public in March, NPLI
is down more than 90%. Faced with lagging sales of its I-Opener
Web device, the company last month slashed the product’s price to
$299 from $399.
