Cable & Wireless HKT is advancing expansion plans for further submarine cable capacity.
Cable & Wireless HKT are landing the US$1 billion Asia-Pacific Submarine Cable Network 2 (APCN-2) in Hong Kong. When completed in 2001, the new undersea cable system will provide fiber optic capacity of 2,560 Gbps.
Cable & Wireless HKT’s South Lantau Cable Station at Tong Fuk in 1995 was purpose-built as the landing point for both segments of the original APCN and Fiber-optic Link around the Globe (FLAG). While the design of the cable station anticipated the landing of a still larger cable at the beginning of the 21st century in 2001, further expansion will be required to accommodate APCN-2’s terminal equipment.
APCN-2 will boost capacity for voice and data services between HK and China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia while providing further links with North America via other transpacific networks.
Cable & Wireless HKT is expanding its network and services to all major cities in the Asia-Pacific region – points of presence have already been established in Taiwan, Singapore and Korea, with plans to enter Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines early next year.
Cable & Wireless HKT was one of ten major regional telecoms to sign a MOU to build APCN-2. Subsequently, other carriers have joined as initial parties to APCN-2, including AT&T and SCBI from the US, the Global One consortium and Cable & Wireless Global Network.
