For busy shoppers on the go, online retailer Amazon.com Inc. Wednesday teamed up with wireless provider Sprint PCS to offer shoppers connectivity to Amazon.com from Internet-ready Sprint PCS phones.
The service is part of Amazon.com’s (AMZN) “Amazon Anywhere” strategy to reach customers through a variety of platforms.
With a Sprint PCS (PCS) phone, Amazon.com customers can shop online by selecting Amazon.com from the phone’s MiniBrowser menu. Registered Amazon.com customers can then purchase any items sold on Amazon.com’s Web site, and new customers can open accounts directly from their phones.
As a special incentive, Amazon.com said it will allow Sprint PCS customers to access its popular Gift-Click and Personal Recommendations features as well as access Best Seller lists.
The announcement comes in time for the holiday season, in which online shoppers are predicted to break previous purchase records. Paired up with the growing wireless Internet device market, Sprint PCS President Andrew Sukawaty predicted the combination will be successful.
“For the first time ever, shopping from your wireless phone…we’re excited
to join Amazon.com to be the first wireless provider to offer online
shopping via the Sprint PCS Wireless Web to our customers nationwide,” said
Sukawaty. “With today’s announcement, we bring our customers the
nation’s leading online shopping destination to the palm of their
hand.”
Sprint PCS launched its Wireless Web service in late September, designed to offer customers a suite of simple, user-friendly wireless data products and services.
