China Railway Telecom Commences Operations

[ASIA] China Railway Telecommunications Company became the latest entrant into China’s telecom market Sunday, receiving official permission to begin operations.

Armed with total capitalization of 13.6 billion yuan (US $1.64 billion), the company will offer fixed-line telephone service, an ISP, data transmission, and IP telephony, the Xinhua News Agency reported via Sina.com.

China’s Ministry of Railways is the majority shareholder of China Railway Telecom, the report said, adding that the company already offers Internet service in 36 cities.
