With so many Internet stocks hitting new lows every day, it was
only a matter of time before the entire market followed suit. On
Thursday, the Nasdaq ended trading at 3074.68, beating its previous
low close for the year of 3164.29 on May 23. Meanwhile, internet.com’s
Internet Stock Index, or ISDEX, finished at 595.79, barely above
its May 26 price of 592.61, the current yearly low. And the numbers
you see below mark the fifth consecutive week that all 13 Internet
sectors are down. That hasn’t happened in the 18 months since
StockTracker debuted in April ’99. It’s also only the second time
that percentage losses for all sectors were in double digits. The
last time that occurred was right before Memorial Day in late May.
And after that? Well, most sectors gained (slightly) in the next
week, and the week after that saw a phenomenal bounceback in which
all groups posted double-digit gains, with two advancing an
astounding 31%. Don’t count on a repeat performance, though.
We have a long way to go before the earnings season from hell is
over. At best, we could see a few sectors gain next week; at worst,
another across-the-board nosedive. Keep those safety belts fastened.
NOTE: Regarding the presidential election, the first candidate to
offer psychological therapy tax credits for Internet investors
gets my vote.

The two wireless device competitors lead the sector this week.
Handspring pulls out of a tailspin that began in late September,
after a strong run-up. The only non-hardware company to gain is
Wireless Facilities, a provider of wireless systems development
and services, which climbs on a deal with Nokia in which WFII will
provide network design and services in Europe, the Middle East
and Africa. Its modest rally in late August long forgotten, IWAV
tumbles to new lows.

Every company in this sector is down for the week. Every company
in this sector is down for the month. Every company in this sector
is down…I think you know where this is going. At least AOL had
some good news this week with the approval of its proposed merger
with Time Warner by the European Commission. Now it’s on to U.S.
regulators and their concerns about cable access for competitors.
The Chinese portals – SINA.com, Chinadotcom and Sohu.com – continue
to suffer in wake of new regulations unveiled earlier this month
by the Chinese government.

Hey, I just noticed that the top four gainers here all have names
ending in “.com”. The long-awaited comeback of the dot.coms is here!
OK, that’s as much false enthusiasm as I can muster. Not that a

priceline.com slogan: Name your price. Today’s: Name your poison.
If I have to keep writing about this stuff, make mine hemlock with

Leading an Internet sector with no gain is like getting into the
NFL playoffs with an 8-8 record. Speaking of which, if ‘Net stocks

Automobile research and shopping site Autobytel.com posts another
strong week after hitting a new low of $4.06 on Sept. 26, grabbing
the No. 2 slot among all ‘Net tickers. But shares began drifting back
down after General Motors announced it would set up a Web site to
sell non-GM vehicles. Since announcing a Baltimore bank would use
its software for Web-based retail banking, Corillian has managed
a slight monthly gain. Home improvement Internet site ImproveNet
says Q3 net loss will be less than expected, but that revenues will
fall short of projections.

RSA Security leads all ‘Net stocks this week, gaining 25.2% after
bouncing off its lowest closing price of the year on Oct. 4 and
announcing, on the same day, that Q3 results would beat street
estimates for earnings and revenue. RSA, which makes authentication,
encryption and digital certificate management software, also said
it would repurchase up to 4 million shares of its common stock over
the next 12 months. Earnings warning by strategic partner Pitney-Bowes
helps make digital rights management technology vendor InterTrust
the week’s second-biggest loser among ‘Nets.

E-business software company Vignette regains most of the ground it
lost from a steep slide that began in mid-September. VIGN climbed
nearly 40% on Monday alone after announcing many of the sites its
software powers were among the be
st-performing on the Web according
to three recent surveys. Enterprise portal technology provider Viador
loses its CFO, but gets a new president and CEO, Jonathan Harding,
who replaces founder Stan Wang, who will stay on as chairman. VIAD
also got something else: A downgrading to “neutral” from “strong buy”
from USB Piper Jaffray. That’s quite a downgrading, if you ask me.

Five companies in this sector – count ’em, five – make the list of
10 biggest losers this week. Breakaway Solutions, an application
services provider, almost falls off the face of the earth after a
Q3 earnings warning. BWAY cited delayed or canceled projects and a
general lack of dot.com business. I wonder why. Another application
services player, Marimba, gets the same treatment for the same
reason. Accrue Software takes the top slot by bouncing off an all-time
low close of $6.88 on Oct. 4, but by Thursday was already below that,
closing at $6.38. So even the gainers are down.

Like a wall clock’s second hand that’s stuck in place, L90 has spent
the past two weeks ticking forward, then back, forward, then back:
7.56, 7.93, 7.75, 7.81, 7.75. It ends the week on a slight uptick.
Like a wall clock that fell to the floor and smashed into pieces,
24/7 Media drops more than 41% this week on no news other than shares
continue to probe new lows.

Razorfish is this sector’s leading Q3 earnings warning victim this
week. Lante also issues a Q3 warning, but after falling on Oct. 4,
shares struggle back slightly, hence LNTE’s perch atop this group.
Ten of the 12 stocks in the sector that have been trading since
Dec. 31 are down more than 77% for the year. GenesisIntermedia.com
is a freak of nature.

Streaming media network provider iBEAM Broadcasting gets a boost from
completion of its buyout of NextVenue, which provides streaming media
services to investment banks and corporations, but by Thursday had
lost most of those modest gains. CoSine Communications goes public
on Sept. 26, posting an impressive 174% gain in its debut. Then COSN
got right into the spirit of things, quickly zeroing in on its $23
per share offer price.

Another sector led by a zero-gainer. Spanish ISP Terra Networks gets
a hefty 1.8% boost on news that CMGI has decided to support TRRA’s
merger with U.S. portal Lycos. Unfortunately, Terra shares tumble
every other day of the week. Hey, I just noticed the bottom of this
list has a heavy international flavor. There’s Internet Gold, which
saw Lehman Bros. reduce revenue forecasts for the Israel-based ISP;
Pacific Internet Limited, setting new lows every day; global player
Digital Island and Korea Thrunet, down 94% for the year.
