Digital Island Jumps on Inktomi, Real Deal

Shares of Digital Island Inc. had rocketed in midday trading on the heels of that company’s alliance with Inktomi Corp. and RealNetworks Inc.

Just before noon, internet.com’s Internet Stock Index had inched up 2.65, or .53 percent, to 504.24, the Nasdaq Composite had climbed 8.09 to 2,851.20 and the Dow Jones industrial average had climbed 2.53 to 11,080.98.

Digital Island (ISLD) had jumped 5-13/16 to 24-11/16. The company, which provides networking services to Internet businesses, Tuesday teamed with Inktomi Corp. and Real Networks Inc. to broadcast video, audio and other live events on the Internet. Real was off 1-13/16 to 86-1/8 and Inktomi had gained 2-3/4 to 118-1/2.

HotJobs.com (HOTJ) had soared 4-11/16 to 34-11/16. The company Tuesday announced plans to air two 30-second commercials during next year’s Super Bowl. Last year, HotJobs spent more than $2 million, or almost half its annual revenue, on a single Super Bowl ad.

Also, Steven Birer of BancBoston Robertson Stephens initiated coverage of HotJobs with a “buy” rating.

SportsLine USA Inc. (SPLN) had added 1-7/8 to 26-3/8. The company’s European unit Tuesday launched a new France-oriented site.

Amazon.com Corp. (AMZN) was up 1-1/8 to 63-9/16. The company Tuesday named Warren Jenson as its new senior vice president and chief financial officer. Jenson, who was formerly with Delta Air Lines, succeeds Joy Covey who vacated the position to become Amazon.com’s chief strategy officer.

America Online Inc. (AOL) had slumped 1-13/16 to 95. The company Tuesday announced a three-year, $33 million strategic alliance with Medscape Inc. Medscape’s consumer health content will be integrated across AOL’s online properties. AOL will also receive warrants to purchase shares in Medscape.

Net2Phone (NTOP) was off 2-1/4 to 79. Net2Phone is teaming with Philippines-based SMART Communications to offer IP telephony services there.
