Downward Drift Continues

This must be what it’s like to play on a cellar-dwelling baseball team in the dog days of August. Week after week brings yet more frustration, more setbacks, more mind-numbing, soul-deadening disappointment. Yet you trudge on, because that is all you can do.

Am I glad I have another vacation coming up.

It was a down week for almost all ‘Net sectors, with only Speed/Bandwidth showing a tiny sliver of a gain. This marks the second straight stay at the top for the infrastructure group, and its second consecutive weekly advance – pretty impressive considering the monthlong losing streak gripping Internet stocks as a whole.

How bad has it been? In the past four weeks, the 13 sectors have put together a paltry five gains. Which, if you’re not keeping score, leaves 47 losses. And just like that forlorn baseball team, the misery won’t end for Internet investors until sometime after Labor Day.

NOTE: I’m going off to cower in my bunker again, so StockTracker Daily will not publish next week. See you on Monday, Aug. 28.

Judging by the logjam of N/A’s in the top four slots, this week clearly belongs to the newer wireless stocks. First, though, to the middle of the pack, where Aether Systems continues its fall from the top ranks of year-to-date gainers. The leading Internet stock at the end of June with a 186% YTD rise, AETH is down 38% since closing at $210.38 on June 21, and now ranks seventh among ‘Net tickers for the year. It may lead the group this week, but 724 Solutions, a maker of infrastructure software for banks, is down 50% from its Jan. 28 first-day close of $71.81. Since dipping below $30 on Aug. 2, shares of wireless handheld device maker
Handspring have climbed nearly 40%.

Ignore whatever GoTo.com did this week; shares have been flatlining around $15 since late May. Lycos only gets a 5.4% boost from its quarterly and fiscal year report released Tuesday showing net profits ($13 million and $21 million, respectively) and exceeding Street estimates. LCOS is down nearly 24% for the year, which makes it the top YTD stock in this sector. Another week, another beating for the international portals. Almost every day brings a new low for Latin American portal StarMedia Network, which fell even further on
Thursday, closing at $10.13. Single digits, here we come. Top performer for the month here is newly renamed Walt Disney Internet Group.

Since reaching an all-time low of 94 cents per share on Aug. 3, HealthGate Data has bounced up 86%. Until the medical content provider can begin to cut losses, however, HGAT shares are going nowhere. Financial site TheStreet.com gets a $7.5 million investment from Paul Allen’s Vulcan Ventures and Go2Net. Given that TSCM lost $13.1 million in Q2, the new cash should last about seven weeks. Pardon me if I don’t go long. Like StarMedia, MarketWatch.com is headed below $10 per share. Does anyone remember when shares of theglobe.com, now selling at $1.13, set an IPO record with a 606% first-day gain? I didn’t think so.

Look at the market capitalization column on the far right. How many billion-dollar players do you see? A half-dozen out of 43. It could be 42 before you know it; Beyond.com has been threatened with a delisting by the Nasdaq. Shares need to get back to the $5 mark, something they haven’t done since March, and won’t do again.
fashionmall.com gets a 16% bump from a Q2 report showing drastically reduced losses. But FASH shares also are coming off an all-time low close of $1.88 on Monday. Shares of Pets.com are down 63.5% since announcing Q2 losses of $24.1 million, or 89 cents per share. That’s down considerably from Q1 losses of $39.1 million, or $2.54 per share. But revenue was up only 14.5% from the previous quarter.

E-learning infrastructure provider Saba Software climbs 50% this week, making it the No. 2 Internet gainer across the board. SABA gets a boost out of deployment of its software by the Norwegian government, which plans to train 3.5 million workers using Saba’s network. pcOrder.com soars on news that the company is buying back up to 1 million of its outstanding shares, plus a licensing deal with America Online. Purchasing and e-commerce software vendor I-many has had a short post-IPO flight: It closed on its first day of trading on July 13 at $12.48, peaked at $14.69 on Aug. 2, and has since been moving south. Oh, and on Monday I-many reported widening losses for the second quarter, which was good for a 27.5% plunge over the next two days. Welcome to our world, IMNY.

An uncharacteristically bad week for this sector, with only two slight gainers. With the exception of a three-month period early this year, Litronic has spent all of its time since going public last July bouncing between $5 and $10 per share. LTNX’s second-quarter report issued on Monday showed revenues of $9.1 million and a net loss of $2.4 million, up from $1.5 million in the year-ago quarter. E-commerce transaction software provider ValiCert, which went public in late July, has had an erratic flight path, but still has managed
to stay above its first-day closing price of

$11.88. Internet Security Systems Group has plunged nearly 50% since announcing a Q2 net profit of 9 cents per share, beating estimates.

oice-over-IP networking player Clarent Communications attracted a lot of attention last week from analysts who said short-selling has driven down share price, creating a buying opportunity. CLRN shares fell 39% on July 28 alone after the company’s Q2 report, despite strong revenue growth and (slight) profitability. It bounces back this week all the way to the top of the charts. Linux software and services vendor Red Hat moves up on deals with IBM and Motorola. Despite a nasty fall this week, Tibco Software has the fifth-best YTD performance of all Internet stocks, with a gain of nearly 87%.

Navidec takes the top slot here on news that it has finalized the sale of its DriveOff.com site by Microsoft’s CarPoint, a Web site for auto purchasers and sellers. Application service provider NaviSite is
one of only a dozen Internet stocks to post gains for the week, month and year. eFax.com gets yanked from the ticker by the Nasdaq. It’s been almost straight downhill for Evoke Communications, a provider of streaming media and communications services, since going public on July 25, when shares closed at $8.13. Stamps.com finally cracks the 90% YTD loss barrier. It should be joined soon by Egreetings.

I suppose it’s possible FreeShop.com got a lift from the Aug. 8 announcement that it has hired two senior executives. Maybe investors interpret it as a sign that FSHP is about to embark upon a Golden Age. Or maybe the company, down more than 90% this year, is merely bouncing off new lows. MyPoints.com last week completed its acquisition of rival Cybergold, which comes off our list. Internet site traffic measurer Media Metrix is down 27.1% for the year, making it the class of this group.

Internet consulting and services player marchFIRST climbs on rumors that it is engaged in serious merger talks with Australian ‘Net firm Sausage Software. This only five months after marchFIRST was formed when Whittman-Hart completed its acquisition of USWeb/CKS. While it rose only slightly this week, Perficient holds the distinction of being the only monthly gainer in this sector. GenesisIntermedia.com, still one of the top YTD ‘Net tickers despite going nowhere since mid-April, has hired Prudential Securities to raise $25 million for expansion of its Centerlinq network of shopping mall Internet kiosks.

Caching appliance vendor CacheFlow turns record quarterly revenue, lower-than-expected losses and positive press into a sector lead. It ran in place this week, but Juniper Networks remains the top Internet stock this year, almost tripling in price from its Dec. 31 close. However, since late May the largest gain among ‘Net tickers belongs to voice and data traffic switch maker Sonus Networks, which had no revenue last year and is losing money. But SONS cut losses in Q2 and is growing revenue rapidly.

For an ever-so-brief time last year, Rhode Island ISP Log On America was the architect of a feel-good story. In the face of an ice-cold IPO market in April 1999, LOAX defied the odds by posting a first-day gain of 250%, closing at $35. But like a former child cast member of “Diff’rent Strokes,” Log On America finds its former glory has rapidly given way to big problems. Shares are down 90% for the year – worst among ISPs – and 44% this week – worst among all ‘Net stocks. Last week’s quarterly report showed a doubling of losses from Q1, while shares continue to descend to new lows. Can a gig as a security guard be far behind? Since touching bottom at $7.13 on July 26, Taiwan ISP GigaMedia is up 69%. Since going public on Feb. 18, however, GIGM is down 86.3%. Hey, you can make
