Turkish operator Turkcell has signed an deal with L.M. Ericsson to deliver wireless high-speed Internet solutions.

The service, which blends carrier-class products from Ericsson’s wireless and datacom portfolios, will be deployed by the end of the year. The WISE High Speed Internet service offers fast connections through a GSM network.

“The High Speed Internet also opens up access for all GSM users to
real-time information and entertainment services,” said Fadi Pharaon,
Ericsson GSM Systems’ director of wireless datacom marketing and sales.

“For instance, Web sites incorporating audio and video streaming are
becoming increasingly common. These are typically optimized for faster data
rates than the conventional single-slot GSM data call.”

The partnership will lead to cheaper and faster service for Turkcell’s
subscribers, and will also give the company a competitive edge as the first GSM operator to invest in the technology, according to Cuneyt Turktan, Turkcell’s CEO.

WISE is a portfolio of Wireless Internet Solutions from Ericsson, designed
to integrate GSM and Internet technologies. The high speed Internet service
is the latest solution in the series, with additional offerings to be
launched later in the year.
