FCC White Spaces Vote Inspires High Hopes

Broadband advocates have great expectations for the new networks and devices that are expected to emerge following the Federal Communications Commission’s vote next week to establish the final rules for using white space spectrum.

At the same time, the final order is still being drafted, which leaves some concern for backers of the technology that the FCC will set overreaching safeguards against interference with TV broadcasts and wireless microphones. Enterprise Networking Planet takes a look.

When the Federal Communications Commission convenes its monthly meeting next week, the commissioners are planning to vote on an order that will set the final rules governing the use of unlicensed television spectrum known as white spaces for wireless Internet service.

The FCC voted in November 2008 to release the white-space spectrum for unlicensed broadband networks, but in the time since has been meeting with various stakeholders to determine the final rules for the implementation of the technology.
