NOTE: Friday’s StockTracker Daily column now features internet.com’s
free e-mail newsletter, Internet StockTracker, which covers the weekly
performances of more than 400 Internet stocks across 13 sectors. If you

Call it wishful thinking, but I’m genuinely optimistic that
Internet stocks, battered and beleaguered for the past five
months, will begin to show some strength over the next few
weeks.
On what do I base this upbeat assessment? Wishful
thinking, for one. But also, as I’ve said often recently, the
round of Q2 reports coming out in the past six weeks or so has
brought the Internet landscape into much sharper focus for
investors. There’s little room for delusion these days; red ink
and vanishing cash reserves, not to mention Nasdaq delistings,
are a clear sign of doom. Conversely, profits, large market share
and robust revenue growth add up to a winning investment.
This fall, the winners will rise from the ashes of this year’s market
meltdown, in large part riding a wave of sideline money entering
the game. The losers…well, when you’ve already lost 90% of
your value, that extra 10% comes pretty hard.
Other things in
favor of a rally: The Fed appears satisfied it has successfully
tapped the brakes on a runaway economy, so interest rate hikes
are no longer a rubber-stamp affair. Then there are the numbers:
This week’s results show 11 of 13 sectors, and nearly 60% of
individual Internet stocks, gaining. Also, in the past month,
54% of all Internet stocks have advanced. Here’s hoping the
momentum carries over beyond the Labor Day weekend. Have a great
holiday.
*Market Cap figure is in millions unless otherwise noted.

That this sector easily leads all others this week hardly is
a surprise, given that nearly half of the companies here gained
at least 20%, and only one lost ground. Wireless content provider
i3 Mobile’s week was good. The past month, though, has been a
problem; only interWAVE has fared worse in this sector during
that time. In fact, IIIM’s sector lead in most part can be attributed
to its Aug. 23 closing price of $5.88 – the stock’s second-lowest
close since going public in early April.

Ask Jeeves rises after announcing deal with Vignette in which
the two will combine technology to create a closed-loop content
management system. It’s the best week ASKJ has had since May. For
the year, shares are down 76%. Yahoo tumbles to the cellar this
week on fears of continued weakness in the online advertising
market.

Like i3 Mobile, EDGAR Online and drkoop.com are at or near the
top this week because they’re bouncing off lows. Not so for real
estate and home goods site site network Homestore.com, which reached
its bottom way back in April. Shares climb this week on strong traffic
growth, and despite news that competitor and Microsoft Web site
HomeAdvisor received $100 million in bank funding. HOMS has gained
54% in the past month. The leading stock in the group during that
time? TheStreet.com, up 70%.

You know it’s a good week when even the e-tail sector surges. Ten stocks
here gain at least 20%, led by E-Stamp, which tops all ‘Net tickers by
soaring 107%. However, there is less here than meets the eye. Most of
the big gainers in this group are on the endangered list. Indeed,
Pets.com and PlanetRx.com rose 25% and 27.8% respectively – and both
still were trading below $1 per share. And if it weren’t for an
announced alliance with the National Federation of Independent Business,
which designated it as the exclusive Internet postage provider for NFIB
members, E-Stamp would be in the same sunken boat.

Online Visa card processor NextCard is one of a handful of losers
for the month in this group, but it nearly wipes out the deficit with
a 36.5% gain. That’s the good news. The bad news is that NXCD hit an
all-time low closing price of $5.25 on Aug. 21. After heading almost
straight downhill following its July 12 IPO, Chicago Internet incubator
divine interVentures has bounced back past its first-day closing price
of $8.78 and is making a run at double-digits. Apparently while I was
on vacation, E Com Ventures ran amok, nearly doubling to almost $2 per
share by Aug. 21. (Can you say stock split?) Now, ECMV is paying for
its revelry.

This sector boasts a number of strong monthly gainers, though many
of this week’s top performers are companies that have dug deep, and
perhaps fatal, holes for themselves this year: Intraware, PFSWeb,
CyberSource, Open Market. Only a few stocks in this once high-flying
sector are up for the year, including leader i2 Technologies, which
announced deals with DaimlerChrysler, Toyota and Volkswagen to develop
online B2B marketplaces for each of the auto makers. Cysive is
punished for losing its biggest customer, which will hurt Q3 sales.

One of only two sectors to decline this week, the Security stocks
are dominated by Israel-based network firewall market leader
Check Point Software, which boasts the second-best YTD performance
of any Internet stock, trailing only Juniper Networks. Internet
Security Systems moves into the black thanks to an impressive
two weeks: S
hares are up 45% since Aug. 16. ValiCert has been on
a wild ride since going public July 28, this week dropping fast
from its all-time high of $15.88 set on Aug. 23.

Interactive-television software vendor Liberate Technologies grabs
the No. 2 slot among all ‘Net tickers, climbing 16% on Wednesday
alone after announcing that BellSouth would use its products to
deliver interactive services to its satellite TV customers. Other
than this and a $100 million investment by Cisco Systems in July,
Liberate and its investors haven’t had much to cheer about this year.
Online travel procurement site GetThere.com soars on news that it
is being purchased by Sabre Holdings for $757 million, or $17.75
per share. GTHR has the second-best monthly mark among ‘Net stocks.

Mediaplex. The online ad technology provider gained 16% more on
Thursday after a favorable mention in the Washington Post. Now MPLX
is down only 79.8% for the year. Will somebody wake up @plan, which
closed at exactly $6 per share for five out of six days through
Wednesday’s trading? Update: APLN surged to $6.06 on Thursday.
Ride that tiger, baby!

Just when the rest of us were having so much fun, Consultant/Designers
have packed the list of 10 biggest losers with four tickers. Leading
the plunge is Viant, which warns investors that Q3 sales will fall
12%-15% short of second-quarter figures. Convergent Group, which
builds Web sites for local governments and utilities, takes some of
the sting out of this week’s loss with a 24% gain on Thursday.

You often hear people say that infrastructure stocks are among the
best bets in the Internet universe. But is it really true? The numbers
indicate the answer is a big, fat “yes.” True, 12 of the 20 stocks
in the sector trading since the beginning of the year are down.
But across all Internet sectors, only 29 stocks are up this year, and
eight of those – or more than one out of four – come from this group.
No other sector comes even close to having that kind of representation
at the top. This group also boasts the top gainer of the year
(Juniper Networks) and the Internet’s largest company (Cisco Systems).

Residential broadband services provider Telocity gains on deal to
offer two months of free service to consumers. Speaking of free
access, Juno Online lands in the runner-up slot, though it remains
down 83% for the year. Another free access provider, NetZero, is
down 85% YTD. Shareholders often sue companies, but Rhode Island
access provider Log On America is suing some shareholders for
allegedly shorting the stock as part of a takeover scheme.
