With employment in the U.S. stagnant if not slipping, there’s plenty of interest in job opportunities. One of the biggest growth areas has been freelance and contract work aided by technology advances that enable more jobs to be done remotely, either from home or in a mobile office situation.
Two of the biggest companies offering online contract employment opportunities are Elance and oDesk. Both firms saw significant growth in job postings and earnings in 2010 and both recently issued reports on what IT areas were hot the past year and what they expect in the year ahead. What were the hot IT skills employers were looking for in 2010? Elance, the online jobs platform, issued its annual review of the hot jobs for the year and some predictions for the year ahead.
Elance’s top five “Hot” and “Not” lists of jobs skills for the year is headed by Search Engine Marketing which saw a 53 percent jump in demand, followed by iPhone, Google App Engine and HTML5 developers respectively. Affiliate marketing positions saw the biggest jump, 69 percent, from 2009. It wasn’t all good news on the mobile side however.
