Aiming to give users easier and more effective
navigation, Infoseek Corp. today
announced a redesign of its portal site.
The Infoseek homepage now features a new navigation bar to put all of the
most popular tools at the top of the page including Stocks, News, Yellow
Pages, Maps, Chat, Homepage Building and Help. The navigation bar is
consistent on every page, the firm stated.
In addition, Infoseek’s directory collection, “Reviewed Web Site Topics,”
is now manually edited, in an attempt to speed up load times. The directory
is organized so when users search for a keyword, they receive an
outline of relevant matches, not just a list, Infoseek said.
Reviewed Web sites are now rated with a check system as part of the
redesign, and the firm noted that links are used on search result pages to
organize information for the user and make navigation simple.
“The Infoseek brand stands for finding what you want on the Web more
accurately, easily and comprehensively,” said Barak Berkowitz, vice
president of marketing at Infoseek. “Infoseek’s new design
delivers on that promise in a new way with a consistency and clarity we
believe users will respond to immediately. The introduction of this
redesign is a strong message of commitment to Infoseek users.”
The company said that the redesign will be launched in two phases. The
second phase of the
redesign is schedule for the first week of October, 1998, and will include
a complete redesign of Infoseek Channels.
The future of the the site remains uncertain, as earlier this week
Infoseek and its partner, Disney,
announced plans to launch a new portal, Go.com, in November. Speaking about Infoseek’s
future, a spokeswoman said, “It will not go away as a site or a brand, but
it will come under the portal brand and be part of a network.”
