Internet Council of Registrars (CORE) Forges Ahead With Registrar Applications

The Internet Council of Registrars (CORE) announced today that
it is again accepting applications from companies wanting to act as
registrars of new domain names.

Operating under its own constitution and set of guidelines, CORE currently
lists 87 registrars in 23 countries.

CORE’s original plan to form a competitive registration system for seven
new generic Top Level domains (gTLD) was cast into doubt by White House
aide Ira Magaziner’s “green paper.”

But CORE continues to assert that .arts, .firm, .info, .nom, .rec, .shop,
and .web will be available through CORE registrars “when the Internet
enters its new era of dereguslation and self-governance in 1998.”
