Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) Website was offline from midnight to noon today as a scheduled maintenance ran over time by some four hours. Similarly, Yahoo (NASDAQ:YHOO) mail service was down last night. Both occurrences highlight the need for multiple redundant systems to be in place to keep the “doors” open.

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) again gets accused of disabling a rival multimedia Internet product, a video player by Digital Bitcasting, which claims 8 million users. Digital Bitcasting says Microsoft’s Media Player disables its player automatically without asking for user preferences. A few weeks ago RealNetworks CEO Rob Glaser said much the same thing, only his words came before the U.S. Senate probing Microsoft’s practices.

@Home (NASDAQ:ATHM) wants to take its message to the home via CompUSA consumer computer retail outlets where it will demo its service and sell a startup kit in 25 areas where @Home service exists. With more than 4 million homes passed only some 300,000 have signed up for @Home, clearly leaving a marketing gap that its cable partners cannot fill.

We hear that one of the problems is that cable operators don’t want to send out two technicians to do the install: one for cable and one for @Home. The cable install is a no-brainer but because of the diversity of PCs and software in existence configuring a PC cable-modem may take longer. Said another way, the cable guys seem to prefer to sell you more premium cable channels, flip a switch at the headend and be done with it, rather than be your network service provider.
