iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions — a Sun/Netscape alliance — Wednesday unveiled what it terms “the industry’s first portal platform” that includes a fully integrated wireless capability.
The new platform will allow companies to make their content available to mobile users.
iPlanet Portal Server deploys B2B, B2C and B2E portals. In March of this year the it was selected by the US Department of Defense for a project that will eventually support 2.5 million users consisting of staff, vendors and civilians.
The mobile version (iPlanet Portal Server: Mobile Access Pack) enables enterprises to channel corporate services and applications to mobile employees to help increase productivity and promote rapid access to business-critical information. It is fully integrated with iPlanet Messaging, Calendar and Directory Server software products and supports wireless service delivery protocols, WAP and I-mode, SMS and location based services.
According to Duncan Peruch, Business Development Manager at iPlanet South Africa, “The key to attracting and retaining Internet customers and partners is to provide personalized access to services relevant to each user based on who they are, where they are and how they are accessing information. iPlanet has worked with each of its customers to design multi-channel portals that reduce overall investment, decrease time to market and allow these services to be rolled out quicker in a personalized manner to the end user.”
The iPlanet Portal Server is a “key component of the Sun Open Net Environment (ONE).” Sun ONE is an open software architecture designed to support interoperable, smart web services, according to the company website. Sun defines a ‘smart Web service’ as a service that can understand situational context and share that context with other services.
