ISDEX & NASDAQ Show Strong Week

ISDEX shows a 89% run year to date as the first quarter of 1999 draws to an end, easily one of the best quarters ever for Internet stocks as a group. The past week posted respectable gains also. Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) led the list of ISDEX climbers since March 23 up 38% to $164.6875 per share as the etailer announced auctions for computer gear.

Meanwhile, Concentric Networks (NASDAQ:CNCX) decided on a 2-for-1 stock split that sent investors scurrying to gobble up shares in the ISP, as has been the habit with many Internet splits. CNCX rose 31% to $73.875. Let’s see the 50 ISDEX stocks and how they fared:

Notable new shaker is iVillage (NASDAQ:IVIL), the first women’s Web stock firm to find the firmament on Wall Street. IVIL found favor after its successful IPO last Friday as investors look for the “next big thing.” One stat that interests me is that about half of all Web users are women.

I take that as a positive data point for iVillage if it can execute on the promise. Being cashed up from its IPO helps of course and being first to cash up. Younger women’s site iTurf has filed and awaits its IPO.

AOL (NYSE:AOL) benefited from a tout and $215 target price, along with an alliance with Sun for AOL’s new Netscape software division.

We’re starting to finally see some signs of life in the long dormant and neglected security software space. CheckPoint (NASDAQ:CHKP) and Security Dynamics (NASDAQ:SDTI) both moved up double digits. Security Dynamics opened a European office that signals perhaps new growth in that region while CheckPoint’s leading firewall solution won top honors from Secure Computing Magazine.

No such luck for ISS Group (NASDAQ:ISSX) as it lingers near the bottom of the ISDEX this week. Keeping it company are Network Solutions (NASDAQ:NSOL), a recent favorite of some observers but which took a hit on comments made by a shortselling firm about its prospects.

eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY) fell on Amazon moving into the auction arena while Egghead.com (NASDAQ:EGGS) ironically was started as a “strong buy” by Prudential but ended down 10% to $18.25 per share since March 23.
