Korean Cyber-malls Try to Cope With Traffic Surge

Cyber-malls in Korea are concentrating on improving their systems in order to cope with the explosive
traffic increase.

Major Internet malls including Interpark, Metaland and Samsung Internet
Shopping Mall
, are introducing load balancing system to improve overall
performance and reliability of the site by automatically rebalancing the
load as the traffic to their malls exceed 100,000 daily.

“Considering the current traffic increase rate on our web site, the
number of visitors to our Internet shopping mall is expected to increase by 150% during the third quarter of this year,” said an executive of Intrerpark.

“So, we are working on system improvement of our cyber mall in order to
prevent the possible failure of our web server, which may happen
unexpectedly as a result of excessive traffic load, as well as to attract more online shoppers through stable system operation.”

Interpark is expected to complete changes to the existing system
environment for its web mall. The company is introducing BEA WebLogic server by early November this year.

Samsung has decided to invest 2 billion won (US$1.7 million) into its cyber-mall and will introduce system facilities needed to replace the existing Windows NT system with Unix system. For load balancing, the company will introduce Foundry’s ServerIron.

Company officials say that Samsung is planning to stabilize server
system by introducing the new Unix system in order to cope with increased users of it Internet mall, which currently stands at 120,000 a day.

Other Internet malls, including Hansol CS Club, Lotte Department Store’s
Internet mall
and Cosmetic Land, are also working on stabilizing their systems.
