Granted, it’s the equivalent of breaking up a no-hitter when
your team is losing 10-0, but at least our long streak of weeks
with no Internet sectors gaining ends at five.
Even with last Friday’s huge recovery, though, only two ‘Net
groups – Wireless and Consultants/Designers – avoided losses
for the week. We’re still in the middle of a punishing earnings
season, with any number of ‘Net players expected to report red
ink for the third quarter.
On the upside, there were some impressive earnings reports
from a number of Internet powerhouses this week – America Online,
Check Point Software and eBay, among others – so the bottom may
finally be in sight.

Right off the bat we have a sector posting a gain, the first one
to do so in six weeks. Leading the ascendancy is wireless data
and ISP GoAmerica, which rolls out service in nine U.S. markets
and gets a "strong buy" rating from Morgan Stanley. After quickly
losing almost 50% of its value after going public in late September,
wireless infrastructure software and services provider AvantGo
rebounds this week. Red-hot wireless device maker Handspring gets
support from investors despite widening losses, as revenues for its
first quarter reach $70.5 million.

Though it's buried in the middle of the pack this week, the big
story in the sector this week is America Online, which released
impressive Q3 earnings after the market closed Wednesday, beating
Wall Street forecasts for earnings and meeting expectations with
advertising and e-commerce revenues. But continued concerns about
declining spending on online advertising muted any positive reaction
to AOL's quarterly, as shares rose and then quickly fell after the
numbers were released. Yahoo! fell victim to the same phenomenon
after issuing Q3 figures that exceeded revenue and earnings
estimates.

Trying to undue the tremendous damage from its losing court battle
with Universal Music Group, online music distributor MP3.com
reaches a preliminary agreement with the National Music Publishers'
Association that will give MPPP online selling rights to more than
1 million songs. Shares rose 45.5% in reaction to the news on
Wednesday. MPPP on Thursday reported third-quarter losses of
$6.1 million, or 9 cents per share, beating analysts' loss estimates
of 12 cents per share. Women's Web site network iVillage has found
its level: below $2 per share. Someone needs to put IVIL out of
its misery. Snowball.com continues to melt in wake of Q3 warning
earlier this month.

Heading the group this week are two doomed mini-caps. Early this
month, eSAFETYWORLD actually announced net earnings for the fiscal
year of 1 cent per share. Unfortunately, sales for the year -- the
entire year! -- totaled a mere $724,000. This week's comeback is
due not to excitement over earnings, but to a bounce off a new
low of $0.88 on Oct. 9. Fun SFTY Fact: On Oct. 3, Oct. 5 and
Oct. 19, no eSAFETYWORLD shares were bought or sold. Since
announcing larger-than-expected quarterly losses and a round of
deep layoffs in late September, Garden.com has been slowly sinking
into the soil.

Divine interVentures, the Chicago Internet incubator, was a great
idea - two years ago. But DVIN's public offering this year was
ill-fated and ill-timed. It may lead the sector this week, but it
soon will lead in another category: First among this group to
disappear. Another stumbling incubator, Internet Capital Group,
may be an even bigger disaster, falling 93.4% so far this year.
Online broker DLJdirect reached a new low of $4.38 on Wednesday
before gaining almost 19% Thursday after company officials said
Q3 losses would be smaller than expected.

It's down 18.5% in October, but for this week at least Art Technology
Group looks like the top-performer it has been since spring. Shares
are up 21.3% this week, and 77.3% for the past six months. After the
market closed on Wednesday, ATG competitor BroadVision reported
Q3 revenues of $120.2 million, a 303% increase over the year-ago
quarter, and a net loss of $52.8 million, or 20 cents per share.
E-commerce transaction services provider CyberSource reaches a new
all-time low closing price of $5.52 after a nearly 40% drop in price
this week.

As we've seen countless times in recent months, it's not that hard
for an Internet company to lose 80% of its value. But in one week?
Hat's off to Pilot Network Services for showing us what a real
slippery slope looks like. Things are getting ugly for PILT. On
Wednesday, Pilot announced it would fail to meet Wall Street
expectations for Q2 and was conducting a formal probe of its revenue
recognition practices. PILT also announced the resignation of its
CFO (on the job for only three weeks) and its VP of financial
planning. Not surprisingly, this has already triggered the filing
of a class-action shareholder lawsuit. Internet Security Systems
rises in anticipation of impressive Q3 numbers, which it delivered
on Wednesday, while Check Point Software Technologies turns in
stellar financials.

I always thought PASW was an animal-rights group, but apparently it's
the name of the company formerly known as Pacific Softworks, a maker
of data management so
ftware. It's stock is a dog, though, nearly
falling below $1 per share before bouncing back enough to lead the
sector. On Tuesday, founder and chairman Glenn Russell resigned from
the board of directors. Content management software vendor Interwoven,
as mentioned previously, is the No. 1 'Net stock over the past six
months. IWOV on Tuesday announced a loss of $7.7 million, or 16 cents
per share, in Q3, up from $4.8 million, or 14 cents, a year ago.
Sales of $39.4 million, though, beat street estimates and blew away
year-ago totals of $4.3 million.

Do we have a new superstar in our midst? Hardly. Breakaway Solutions
leads all 'Net stocks this week with a 102% gain only after falling
to a new all-time low closing price of $2.81 on Oct. 11 - exactly
one week ago Wednesday. BWAY announced on Oct. 4 that it would
miss analysts' estimates with Q3 earnings. Equinix, which runs
service-oriented online business exchanges for e-commerce companies,
content providers and ASPs, nearly doubles in price this week after
bouncing off its lowest closing price since going public in August.
EQIX also released Q3 numbers showing revenues of $3.9 million, or
341% over Q2 sales, and $16.7 million in net losses, up from
$15.7 million in the previous quarter.

If there is a ground zero these days for gross skepticism about the
Internet economy, it is right here in this sector. Investors are
exceedingly bearish about the outlook for online advertising, so much
so that nine of the 19 companies in the group have lost at least 50%
in the past month. Sharing the cellar this week are online direct
advertising firm MyPoints.com, which warned that Q3 losses would be
far worse than expected, and @plan.inc, which lost all (and more)
of the gains from the late-September news that it would be bought
by DoubleClick.

Convergent Group, a e-commerce consultancy for the utility industry,
soars to the No. 3 slot among all 'Net tickers after oilfield
services company Schlumberger announced plans to buy a nearly 72%
stake in the firm for $276 million, which values CVGP at $8 per share.
Convergent was trading below $5 before Monday's news. Scient gains
nearly a third by bouncing off an all-time low closing price on
Oct. 11. Xpedior burnishes its credentials as a cheap buyout target
by falling below the $2 per share and $100 million market cap marks.

stock over the past six months (second to Interwoven), with a gain
of 235%. CFLO advances this week on news that it plans to buy
streaming content technology provider Entera for $440 million. After
two weeks of coming down from its stellar IPO in late September,
CoSine Communications heads north again. A revenue shortfall in
Q3 caused by cash-strapped partners sends shares of broadband
services provider Covad Communications tumbling nearly 60% on
Wednesday alone.

Korea Thrunet bounces off a new bottom, getting a little extra
altitude from an alliance with Korean consumer e-shopping site
Hansol CSN. The two companies intend to co-develop an online shopping
mall on Thrunet's new Korea.com portal. Battered and bruised free
access provider Juno Online Services nudges up after securing promise
of up to $125 million in equity financing from private investment fund.
Telocity Delaware is getting that penny-stock look, though compared
to some of the other 90-pound weaklings in this group (check the
market caps of PNV, Internet America and FASTNET), TLCT looks
downright robust.
