Lycos Lands Portal Deal With PC Makers

Lycos Tuesday signed a deal with Packard Bell NEC Inc. to become the exclusive Internet portal on all new Packard Bell and NEC personal computers.

As of June 15, Lycos icons will be appear on the desktops of all new Packard Bell and NEC PCs, directing customers to one-click Lycos’ Internet service. Users will arrive at the Lycos portal site regardless of whether they pick IE or Netscape as the browser of choice.

Packard Bell and NEC customers can employ a co-branded version of the “My Lycos” personalized portal
start page. Additional Internet services include versions of Lycos Search, MailCity and Angelfire.

“The Packard Bell and NEC brands have strong worldwide market positions and this agreement makes Lycos the Internet starting point for all new consumer PC customers,” said Bob Davis, Lycos’ chief executive officer. “Alliances such as this further our mission to become the most visited online destination in the world.”

The PC maker expect the move to contribute to long-term brand loyalty through personalized service on their desktops, according to Packard Bell NEC Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Alain Couder.
