The patent-infringement lawsuits have been coming fast and furious in the tech world of late, particularly in the mobile arena. For Microsoft, which is making a big bet on its new Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system, the risk isn’t worth it.
The software giant has confirmed plans to license a host of patents, including smartphone IP from Palm and PalmSource, in an effort to stave off lawsuits alleging patent infringement that could mar the company’s forthcoming mobile push. In a move aimed at shielding itself and its customers from lawsuits, Microsoft confirmed Friday that it has licensed an intellectual property (IP) portfolio that includes smartphone patents from Palm and PalmSource.
The news comes just days before Microsoft’s (NASDAQ: MSFT) launch gala for its entry into the smartphone space. Windows Phone 7 is due for its close up on Monday in New York.
