As it prepares to deal with competition in the lucrative domain registration business, Network Solutions Inc. Wednesday tapped David Hotzman to serve as its first chief technology officer.

Holtzman, who was previously NSI’s senior vice president of engineering, will oversee the company’s entire technology strategy in addition to supervising the engineering unit.

Holtzman will report to Michael Daniels, NSI’s acting chief executive officer.

“With a growing registrar business and a host of new value-added identity services, Dave will focus on the long-term strategy to enable us to scale systems and respond to the technical challenges,” Daniels said.

Holtzman said NSI faces a number of technological challenges as it continues to invest in technology and strives to diversify.

“Domain names are just the beginning, there are many related technologies that Network Solutions will help to pioneer and bring to market over the next few years,” he said.
