PC Sales Look Strong for 2010: IDC

The PC market has seen its share of ups and downs. Hardware sales rocketed in the lead up to the infamous Y2K bug in 1999, but IT budgets were tightened considerably following the dotcom crash a few years later.

Other factors can also affect IT’s willing to buy new desktops. For example, Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 7, has been credited with boosting PC sales. Hardware Central reports on IDCs rosy outlook for PC sales worldwide in 2010.


Thanks to strong growth in the first quarter and solid indicators for the rest of the year, coupled with a recovering economic condition, research firm IDC is projecting PC sales to increase almost 20 percent in 2010.


For the first quarter of 2010, IDC reported growth of global PC shipments at 27.1 percent, which exceeded a prior estimate by market researcher iSuppli. Based on that number and slow but certain economic recovery, IDC now looks for worldwide PC sales to increase 19.8 percent over 2009 figures, according to its Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker.

Unlike much of 2009, netbooks will not be the main driver.
