Physicians Online, the
operator of the Physicians’ Online Network in the United States, teamed up
with Germany’s Health Online Service multimedica to build an international Internet community for doctors.
The new venture will enable member physicians in both Germany and the US to share clinical information within secure discussion areas.
“The practice of medicine has no boundaries,” commented Physicians’ Online
(POL) president and CEO David Richards. “Because
patients all over the world have the same basic needs, there are
tremendous benefits for people everywhere when doctors can share
information across borders instantly. And of course, physicians
themselves benefit by broadening their knowledge network.”
The new community will function as a separately branded area within the
Physicians’ Online and Health Online Service multimedica sites.
According to the companies, multimedica subscribers will have access to all
the services on the POL
site.
Founded in 1994 and based in Tarrytown, New York, Physicians’ Online
is designed to provide its subscribers with access to MEDLINE and other
medical
databases, clinical symposia with peers and national experts, CME credits,
daily medical news, recruiting services, private e-mail accounts, Internet
access, and other services.
Based in Berlin, Health Online Service multimedica reaches more than 15,000
physicians. It is a
joint venture of Bertelsmann AG, Scientific Springer Publishing House,
and Burda Group.
