It’s hard to tell if Wall Street’s latest infatuation with Internet stocks
has more to do with first date jitters or genuine affection. Ever since
Intel shocked the PC stock world with weaker than expected results,
institutional investors who bailed from silicon have found some solace in
“sizzle-thon,” and that means all roads lead to the Net.
But we suspect that a few of these big money players may be buying on
strength of brand and not weakness of value for some of the higher flyers
such as Amazon and Yahoo! It’s no wonder then that the top three in our
latest tally are RealNetworks (NASDAQ:RNWK), Network Solutions
(NASDAQ:NSOL), and Sportsline (NASDAQ:SPLN), each a leader or top two in
its category.
A lot of sideways movement, running to stand still for stocks like CyberCash
(NASDAQ:CYCH), Verisign (NASDAQ:VSGN), and Infoseek (NASDAQ:SEEK).
Somewhat surprisingly, CyberGuard (NASDAQ:CYBG) bottom feeds at near last
even as Internet security issues moved skyward, especially newbie ISS Group
(see ISR March 31).
CNET’s bottom rung position also offers cause for pause. In the end, we
think that with more than 450 employees the cash drain may be catching up
to the technology news innovator.
