Red Menace Continues To Plague ‘Net Tickers

NOTE: Friday’s StockTracker Daily column now features internet.com’s free e-mail newsletter, Internet StockTracker, which covers the weekly performances of nearly 400 Internet stocks across 13 sectors. If you would like this newsletter delivered to your e-mail each Friday, you can sign up here.

Aug. 4, 2000 – Last week only one Internet sector posted a (razor-thin) gain. The rest lost ground, with one group turning in double-digit losses.

This week there are no sectors in the black, while eight of 13 plunged more than 10%. That’s because investors continue to see too much red in the quarterly reports bombarding Wall Street this earnings season.

The flow of Q2’s soon will dwindle to a trickle, but the bad aftertaste could linger through Labor Day. Next week won’t be as bad – we might even see a couple of sectors gain – but don’t count on anything resembling a sustained rally. In this summer of uncertainty and gloom, the market just isn’t ready.

In its first week of trading since being spun off from network equipment vendor 3Com, handheld Internet device manufacturer Palm becomes the only member of this sector to gain share price. Everyone else took a bath, including several of this year’s highest Internet flyers, wireless applications services provider Datalink.net and content and transaction services provider Aether Systems. Still reeling from adverse market reaction to its proposed purchase of content network Go2Net, InfoSpace loses more than one-third of its value (yet, amazingly, doesn’t crack the list of top 10 decliners).

This sector doesn’t even have a gainer. At least GoTo.com has stabilized since dropping below $20 per share after reporting wider quarterly losses on July 24. But with a loss of 73% in the YTD, the pay-for-position search engine is in jeopardy. As is Ask Jeeves, which shares the cellar this week with LookSmart. For the year, though, ASKJ is in a category by itself, with a mind-numbing loss of 84%. It’s hard to imagine any company doing worse than that, but I count 26 other ‘Net tickers that have lost even more of their value. ASKJ rallied briefly last week after beating street estimates of a 56 cents per share Q2 loss. This week investors put ASKJ’s actual loss of 51 cents per share in better perspective.

Online e-learning company DigitalThink is emerging as a star in this sector, though there’s not a lot of competition. DTHK is one of only six content players with a billion-dollar market cap, and it has gained 49% in the past month and 94% from its Feb. 25 first-day closing price of $29. Salon.com gets a boost after reporting quarterly losses of 36 cents per share, beating estimates of 41 cents per share. Revenues nearly doubled to $1.8 million from $1 million. It doesn’t matter; SALN is going away, along with any other company sporting rapidly shrinking market caps. “Gen i” content network Snowball.com
last week reported 459% revenue growth over the year-ago quarter and reduced losses from the previous quarter, but investors focus on the bottom line ($14.3 million net loss). Last week’s top Internet gainer, drkoop.com, returns to form after merger talks with a prospective savior fall through and a large corporate shareholder announces it will unload 2.75 million shares of KOOP, which is like trying to sell Confederate currency in 1866.

       E-tailers Ave. -14.0%

Members of the e-tail sector are like actors in a slasher movie – nearly all of them are doomed; it’s just a matter of when their time comes. This week, five victims fall at least 30%. Four stocks in the group now trade for less than $1 per share, and another nine are under $2 per share. Two e-tailers have market caps below $10 million, which, under SEC guidelines, qualifies them for food stamps. And the top performer for the year among this group is Cheap Tickets, which is down nearly 13%. Want more disaster stats? Of the 36 e-tailers that have been trading all year, 22 have lost at least 70% of their
value. But to me, the most amazing E-tail Fun Fact is this: Underwriters managed to take a half-dozen online merchants public this year.

Even one of the smallest Internet herds is not impervious from the brutal thinning-out process. Mortgage.com, onlinetradinginc.com, E Com Ventures, Web Street – all soon to become memories. For the year, this sector is down 61%. Don’t expect things to improve soon, either; the big online brokers are fighting lower trading volumes, while CMGI and Internet Capital Group are fighting the market’s sudden lack of confidence in ‘Net incubators. In fact, on Thursday CMGI said it will change the way it reports revenue in order to reposition itself to investors and kickstart moribund shares. The company intends to emphasize its operating businesses and downplay its role as a venture capital firm.

After announced on July 18 a doubling of its net loss for its first quarter, Selectica dropped 40% over the next two weeks. It rebounds enough this week to lead the sector. Liquid Audio, which runs a global online music distribution network, gets hammered by investors (and downgraded by some analysts) for wider quarterly net losses. pcOrder.com cuts its losses, but revenue growth is in double-digits, not good in what is supposed to be an early-stage market. Intraware, Open Market, Neoforma and FirePond have lost about half their value in the past month. HomeCom Communications, which makes software
for financial business applications and owns the smallest market cap of all companies followed by Internet StockTracker, announces it will divest a marketing and insurance agency it bought just a year ago, and will hire a new CFO.

The top two gainers in this sector also lead all ‘Net stocks this week and almost pull this sector into the black. There’s no catalyst in sight to explain NSSI’s rise. The last news from the company was a customer win on Aug. 1; since then the stock has declined slightly. AXENT Technologies performance is much easier to explain: Computer security software vendor Symantec announced it would buy AXENT in a deal that initially values shares of the network security firm at $31.84 each.

Four members of this sector earn their way onto the list of 10 biggest losers this week. Starting from the bottom: Clarent, which sells ‘Net voice and data systems to telcos, beats the street with a net profit of 1 cent per share (analysts expected a loss of 3 cents per share). CLRN also saw quarterly revenue triple to $28.3 million. But investors may be concerned about expected increases in spending for R&D, and a Lehman Brothers analyst slashed his forecast for 2001 earnings to 10 cents a share from 31 cents a share. Net loss for net.Genesis doubles to $5.8 million. Widening losses due to pricing pressures
send S-1 Corp. southward, while Extensity continues to fall in the wake of its July 17 quarterly, which showed growing losses from the year-ago quarter.

It was a tough contest, but this sector limps away with the worst numbers of the week. It took a team effort, though, as 24 of the 50 stocks in the group fell at least 20%. Leading the plunge is Vicinity, which is on the downside of a brief run-up triggered mid-month by news that Verizon Wireless will use VCNT’s Internet marketing infrastructure service in its new mobile Web service. Shares have been drifting down for some time now, but widening quarterly losses ($78 million from $23 million) announced Wednesday don’t help. CONV also says it will lay off 250 workers (or 15% of its employees) and already has closed its offices in Boise, Idaho. There’s an old saying on the Internet: Lose Boise, and you lose everything.

coolsavings.com reports strong revenue growth, but terrible losses ($25.6 million, up from $2.4 million) in its quarterly report released after trading ended July 26. It’s spared the market’s post-earnings wrath, however, thanks to a pre-earnings nosedive that saw shares fall 52% from July 10 through July 25. Media Metrix continues to claw back from the fall it took in late June after its planned merger with Jupiter Communications was announced. Be Free isn’t free yet, but with an 87% YTD, it’s headed fas

t in that direction. Six of the 16 stocks in this sector that have been trading all year are down at least 80%.

PEC Solutions, which targets governmental organizations for its consulting services, reports net income of $1.7 million, up from $1.5 million in the year-ago quarter. Profitablity saved PECS from taking a hit for sluggish revenue growth ($16.6 million, up from $13.4 million in last year’s Q2). For the year, only GenesisIntermedia is up. Continuing to defy logic and odds, GENI – an underperformer all last year – retains the second-highest YTD gain among all ‘Net stocks.

After months of avoiding the free-fall that has gripped so many ‘Net stocks, gravity – and a near-tripling of quarterly losses – catches up to Ramp Networks. RAMP, High Speed Access and CAIS Internet are the weak lambs in this group, which features eight of the 27 Internet tickers that have gained this year. After a scorching run that took it to $174.75 on July 14 from $76.50 on May 26, Juniper Networks has cooled off. JNPR remains, however, one of only seven ‘Net stocks to post triple-digit gains this year.

This week’s big loser across all sectors is DSL.net, which reported losses of $27.3 million in Q2, up from $18.3 million in the first quarter. Put them together and what do you have? About $46 million in YTD losses and a 50% drop in the company’s share price. Rosy forecasts of Internet use in the Asia Pacific region boost Taiwan’s GigaMedia and South Korea’s Hanaro Telecom. HANA also secures a $130 million investment from Lucent Technologies.
