Sonic Systems introduced SonicWALL, an Internet firewall appliance for small- to medium-sized businesses that breaks the sub-$500 barrier.
For $495 it protects an internal network from intruders, prevents data theft, and stops employees from accessing objectionable material from the Internet, the firm said.
“Small to mid-sized companies, such as law and accounting offices or public relations firms, hold a lot of proprietary information on unprotected networks,” Sreekanth Ravi, president and CEO of Sonic Systems. “Hackers have discovered this hole and can go after insider information about public companies. SonicWALL protects against these potentially devastating losses of information and also provides real time alerts to the administrator when such attacks are in progress.”
“Each day I review the SonicWALL e-mail log file, it reflects over 50 attempts into our system,” said user David Dobbins, technology coordinator for the Pe Ell School District in Washington. “Sonic’s Internet security appliance very effectively stops attempts from automated systems to gather data and put unwanted files on our school’s network of 150 computers.”
No larger than a video cassette, SonicWALL packs four products into a
single box. Its firewall is designed to block denial of service (DoS) attacks, ActiveX, Java,
and cookies, and sends alerts via e-mail when the network is being attacked. Its content filter works to allow businesses and schools to block access to adult and
violent web sites.
Its reporting facility shows the most-accessed Web sites, top users of bandwidth, and top users by service. Fourthly, its Network Address Translation (NAT) allows companies to use private addresses for security and easier address management.
Prices for SonicWALL start at $495 for 10 IP addresses.
