Spyglass Ships Prism 2.2 Internet Content Delivery Platform

Feb 8, 1999

Spyglass Inc. Monday unveiled its Prism 2.2 content delivery platform which converts standard Internet content into formats matching the requirements of handheld Internet devices, televisions and mobile phones.

The announcement came at the Wireless ’99 trade show.

Spyglass Prism’s dynamic content conversion technology delivers optimized Web-based content. In addition, Spyglass Prism 2.2 can also format content in WML, the markup language used by WAP-enabled cell phones.

To support WAP devices, Spyglass Prism 2.2 converts HTML to WML. It can
also split one
document into multiple, smaller linked documents if the device has limited
memory and display. Spyglass Prism 2.2 also allows for image conversions,
converting GIF and JPEG images into WBMP, the WAP image format. Spyglass
Prism 2.2 can also scale images to fit in a limited display area.

Content providers can use Spyglass Prism to eliminate the need to develop
and maintain multiple versions of a Web site, where each
version is targeted to a particular device. Prism also acts as an
application framework that allows the creation of “e-care” (electronic
customer care) services.

“Service providers and content developers alike can benefit from Spyglass
Prism’s flexible architecture,” said Jack Armstrong, Spyglass director of
Internet solutions. “Spyglass Prism can serve as the basis for
revenue-generating applications and services that need to deliver existing
Web-based content to a wide variety of devices in a cost-effective manner.”

“Spyglass has been a long-time active member of the WAP Forum,” Armstrong said.”WAP provides a standardized communications protocol optimized
for wireless data services. Solutions built on Spyglass Prism complement the
WAP architecture by allowing WAP-enabled cell phones and other devices to
gain access to Internet and intranet-based information services.”
