Stocking Stuffers They’re Not

Though a brief post-Thanksgiving slump took some of the steam out of the
recent Internet stocks, many are trading at highs not seen since last
April and May.

And how high is high? A look at the latest numbers from internet.com’s
Internet StockTracker newsletter shows that 38 ‘Net companies are
trading above $100 per share (the list is below), compared to 10 valued
in triple digits on Sept. 1, and 12 on July 1.

The 38 companies comprise more than 10 percent of the stocks covered in
StockTracker. There would be more on the list, too, if companies such as
America Online Inc. (AOL)
hadn’t recently split.

The priciest shares belong to e-commerce software vendor Commerce One (CMRC)
and infrastructure player Juniper Networks (JNPR).
Commerce One was trading early Friday afternoon at 340, after having
closed Thursday at 345. Juniper was up to 308-1/4 Friday after finishing
Thursday at an even 300.

Six others – portal giant Yahoo (YHOO),
optical networking products vendor Sycamore Networks (SCMR),
security software company VeriSign (VRSN),
Commerce One competitor Ariba (ARBA),
broadband circuit maker Broadcom (BRCM)
and Linux leader Red Hat (RHAT)
– are trading above $200 per share.

Back in early September and July, no ‘Net stock was trading even close
to $200 per share.

Not surprisingly, the number of companies now valued in excess of $1
billion is up dramatically. Currently 123 ‘Net companies carry a
billion-plus valuation, compared 77 in September and 66 in July.
